Overview

Umm Gamar is a long-isolated reef formed by an underwater mountain, near the island having the same name as the dive site and about 90 minutes away from Hurghada. Umm Gamar means Mother of the Moon, a reference to the crescent-shaped wedge of the island at the top of the reef.

On Umm Gammar island, there is a plateau and a wall sloping down well beyond 30 meters. Along the wall, there are three large blocks, one with a small cave underneath. The blocks are home to thousands of glass fish and are covered with brightly colored soft corals. Occasional glances out into the blue and you may be rewarded with the sighting of a gray reef shark or a passing school of barracuda or tuna. Along the reef, you may spot a large turtle and almost certainly giant morays. At the end of the dive, take time to explore the small blocks on the plateau; there you may find stonefish and crocodile fish.
